Code that counts: Meet Maventa summer trainees!
Summer is here, and so are the summer trainees! This year, Maventa is welcoming two software developer trainees, Samuel and Juho, who are joining the team for the season to dive into real, meaningful work on e-invoicing.
Code that counts
Samuel joins Maventa's Product Team 3 with a background in Business and IT from Laurea University of Applied Sciences, from where he graduated last November with a degree in Developing Digital Services. His main focus this summer is migrating a GDPR service, with billing-related work also on the horizon.
For Samuel, the most rewarding part has been watching the pieces come together: "It has been exciting migrating and refactoring the code, so I can understand how the system works. It has also been fascinating seeing each piece of the puzzle become complete, and it get nearer to working in production". He thinks it’s nice to see his efforts translate to tangible and positive effects for the company.
Juho, meanwhile, brings a computer science background from the University of Helsinki, where he is wrapping up his bachelor's degree before moving on to master's studies in the autumn. He is joining Product Team 2, who handle the receiving side of invoicing, and will spend the summer working on invoice scanning related services.
What draws Juho to the work is the scale and complexity of it. At Maventa, even a single bug fix can have a ripple effect across thousands of companies and their end-customers.
Why Maventa?
Both Samuel and Juho had first heard of Maventa through their schools, where Visma came up as a name worth knowing. What convinced them both was not just the technical work on offer, but the culture.
Samuel, who made a career change from retail management to software development, was drawn by Maventa's reputation as a place that takes development seriously. "I heard how good it was as a workplace and a teaching place," he says. Since joining, he has found that reputation well-earned: the environment is relaxed but focused, and people are genuinely open to sharing knowledge.
Juho noticed the same thing on a university excursion to Visma. "I was struck by how good the work culture seemed here. People looked genuinely satisfied," he recalls. The combination of a healthy work culture and the career value Maventa could offer made the decision straightforward.
Learning on the job
One thing that has stood out to both trainees is how easy it has been to ask for help and get on with the work. Samuel appreciated that trainees are trusted to have a go and take charge of their work. Juho was similarly struck by how approachable the team is and how naturally the collaboration flows day to day.
For Samuel, this traineeship is also about building confidence and developing his skills and abilities even further. Juho echoes the sentiment, seeing the skills he gains here as something he will carry forward regardless of where his career takes him.
Beyond the office
When they are not working, Samuel will be spending time renovating the cabin he is living in, chipping away at some personal projects, and getting out camping with his dog. Juho has an interrailing trip in the works with friends, though it might shift to late summer or autumn depending on schedules.
Visma Summer Trainee Program
Maventa is proud to take part in Visma Finland's Summer Trainee Program, welcoming students across software development, marketing, and more. Beyond their daily work, the trainees also take part in shared training sessions and networking events shared across Visma companies.
